Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia, Gynaecomastia is a condition that occurs as a result of abnormal development of breast tissue in men and can lead to physical and psychological disorders as well as aesthetic concerns. A significant proportion of gynaecomastia cases are idiopathic (the cause is unknown or cannot be determined with certainty). In addition, hormonal imbalances, weight gain, genetic factors and the use of certain medications are among the other common causes of gynaecomastia.

The surgical technique to be applied in gynaecomastia surgery is determined according to the content and amount of breast tissue. While liposuction alone may be sufficient in cases where fat tissue predominates, in most patients, liposuction is combined with surgical removal of mammary gland tissue.

The incisions used during the surgical procedure vary according to the technique applied. In patients undergoing liposuction only, the incisions are usually limited to small incisions on the lateral breast line. In cases where the mammary gland tissue is removed, the incision can be planned in a half-moon shape around the nipple-areola, along a circular line completely surrounding the areola, or rarely with a vertical course in the breast skin and a horizontal course in the inframammary fold.

Gynaecomastia surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The average duration of the operation is between 1-2 hours. In most patients, discharge is planned after hospitalisation for 1-2 days. Patients can usually return to their daily lives within 7-10 days. In the postoperative period, the use of a special medical corset is recommended for about 4 weeks. The final breast form is formed within 6-12 months.
